    A new chapter for First Book and young readers

    This week, First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides books to disadvantaged children, is sending out $5.2 million worth of books from that Niskayuna (Schenectady County) warehouse to schools from Alaska to Hawaii, with a heavy compass point in New York.

    Workers Memorial Day: Losses marked by tribute, pledges to improve worker health and safety

    They were honored at a somber Workers Memorial Day ceremony this morning at NYSUT Headquarters. One by one, the victim's names and causes of death were called out, followed by the ring of a hand bell. For each name, a volunteer wearing purple laid a red rose on a mirror in the middle of a draped centerpiece, as many in the audience cried for the lost lives.
