Leslie Solius Verneret, Paraprofessional from UFT
* Paraprofessional
* PS 268 Emma Lazarus, Brooklyn

The loss of Leslie Verneret has left a void in the PS 268 Emma Lazarus community, where she played an integral part. She was known by all for being trustworthy, hardworking and dedicated to supporting her students and colleagues.

Leslie was a paraprofessional for 25 years, most of that time at PS 268 in East Flatbush. Simultaneously, she worked as a nurse at the Oxford Nursing Home in downtown Brooklyn. She started her day at 6 a.m. at the school and ended her day at midnight after her shift at the nursing home.

Leslie lived a life of service, helping those around her in both her professional and personal life. “Her strongest influence on me was her work ethic,” said her son, Stephane Pardo. “She poured her heart into being there for us as a single mother,” he said. He was also inspired by his mother’s firm belief that women can do anything and are equal to men in the workforce.

Leslie also taught her children, Stephane, 30, and Geslie Claude, 18, that no conversation is off limits; you can say anything you need to, as long as you say it respectfully, Stephane said.

The devoted mother and provider came to the U.S. from Haiti seeking more opportunity and a better life for her family. She will be missed by all who knew her.
