The Schenectady Federation of Teachers, led by President Juliet Benaquisto, received the 2017 Best of Schenectady Award in the Labor Organizations category. The Schenectady Award Program identifies companies and organizations that "help make the Schenectady area a great place to live, work and play" through service to their customers and the community.

Furwa Jawad, United Federation of Teachers, has written The Story of My Suffering: A Collection of Short Stories of Suffering Children. The book features first-person accounts of children abused at the hands of mentally ill parents. Jawad seeks to "provide hope — there is light at the end of the tunnel — and to help start a conversation to ensure no child suffers in silence." Jill Mary Kohler, Retiree Council 22, has written Permission to Approach? The Adventures of an American Tutor Working for a Global Family. Jenny Morrill, Colton-Pierrepont Teachers Association, has co-authored Weaving Healing Wisdom with Paula Youmell. The book is a guide to "letting go and letting be" while educating readers about learning to deal effectively with stress, illness, poor eating habits and injury.
