For 13 years, NYSUT has been educating hospital, home and school health care workers at an annual forum, cracking open timely topics with expert speakers and the latest info.
Last month, 127 health care professionals learned about mental health issues in school settings; how the Affordable Care Act affects the health care workforce; standing up to workplace bullying; managing stress; how to look for signs of human trafficking in patients and students; integrating cultural knowledge into health assessments; and how a school social worker or nurse can use therapy dogs.
"We have to find and identify resources so we can help each person," said Anne Goldman, a United Federation of Teachers vice president and chair of NYSUT's Health Care Professionals Council. "Human dignity and compassion demand we spend time" with patients.
NYSUT President Karen E. Magee thanked the group, including 46 first-timers, for their work. "The day-to-day advocacy and what you do to improve lives is immeasurable."
The keynote speaker was nationally known Ciaran Staunton, director of the Rory Staunton Foundation. He encouraged participants to get active about sepsis education, outreach and parent notification of school injury.
