It's an honor

Gary Nieman, United University Professions Upstate Medical University chapter, received a $50,000 SUNY Technology Accelerator Fund grant to develop a minimally invasive infusion and suction device. The device would remove harmful abdominal fluid.

Stephen Ritz, United Federation of Teachers, was one of three U.S. finalists to advance to the Top 10 for the $1 million Global Teacher Prize. Ritz teaches sixth grade at P.S. 55 in the Bronx. He was recognized for his work in establishing a food production program.

Gertrude Shaffer, South Seneca TA, received the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Eisenhower College Award. She was recognized for her creation and implementation of Words Into Deeds human rights curriculum.

Diane Sullivan, Depew Teachers Organization, received the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra's Music Educator of the Year Award. Sullivan, a 38-year veteran, directs several choirs and choruses for the district and is a co-chair of the music department.
