NYSUT celebrates Black History Month and Women's History Month with two free posters.

The life and accomplishments of Ralph D. Abernathy are celebrated on a poster illustrated by NYSUT staff graphic artist Mark Sharer. Abernathy was a pastor and civil rights leader who helped launch the American civil rights movement.

The union recognizes Women's History Month in March with a free poster highlighting Elizabeth Cady Stanton, an American social activist, abolitionist and leading figure in the early women's rights movement.

Stanton's Declaration of Sentiments, presented at the first women's rights convention in 1848 in Seneca Falls, is often credited with initiating the first organized women's rights and suffrage movements in the United States.

Printable copies of both posters are available at www.nysut.org/publications.

Civil rights legacy lesson

Share My Lesson, the American Federation of Teachers' free online network for educators, offers several lessons relevant to celebrating Black History Month in February.

One lesson on the site encourages students to investigate a contemporary civil rights issue to better understand the continuing legacy of the civil rights movement. The lesson, contributed by the Washington, D.C.-based Newseum, is geared to middle school students. The full lesson, "Civil rights: Identifying community issues," is available at www.sharemylesson.com/teaching-resource/Civil-Rights-Identifying-Community-Issues-50018252/.

Lessons on Winter Olympics

Share My Lesson is also highlighting classroom lessons and resources to mark the XXII Winter Olympic Games, Feb. 7-23, in Sochi, Russia.

Topics such as the science of ice, engineering the halfpipe and the role physics plays in slopestyle skiing are included in dozens of downloadable resources. Visit www.sharemylesson.com.
