It's an honor
The H. Frank Carey High School Teacher of the Year award was presented in memory of Jeffrey Brous, an "impressive musician, beloved teacher, wonderful colleague and a good friend." Brous was a member of the Sewanhaka Federation of Teachers who died in February.
Manya Dhar Mascareno, United University Professions at SUNY Old Westbury, earned a more than $360,000 grant from the National Cancer Institute to help her continue her research into signals and potential treatments for prostate cancer.

Karen Flewelling, North Colonie Teachers Association retiree, wrote Drilling for Hope: One Woman's Work to Provide Clean Water. The non-fiction book is a compilation of her journals from humanitarian missions to 14 countries. She has worked to fund 31 water wells; give goats, pigs and chickens to those in need; and donate soccer balls, uniforms and school supplies. The book is available online at www.Drillingforhope.org.
Elyse S. Scott, Highland TA retiree, wrote Secrets From the Middle: Making Who You Are Work For You. Based on her 30 years teaching middle school, the book provides "support for practicing teachers and anyone else who faces the challenge and joy of spending their days with young adolescents."
