Green Apple Day of Service
Have you wanted to jump-start your school into greener activities like recycling, or have students help conduct energy, lighting or water audits? Try Sept. 29, when the U.S. Green Building Council hosts its Green Apple Day of Service.
More than a million New York students attend K-12 schools daily. The condition of the buildings in which they learn has an impact on their success, and learning about the importance of sustainability and the environment will impact everyone's future.
Ideas for starting a service project can be found at http://mygreenapple.org/greenservice.
NYSUT members who are north of New York City can contact Diane Brandli, dbdesign@twcny.rr.com. On Long Island, contact Tammy Cunha at greenschools@usgbc-li.org.

Campus Sustainability Day
Many colleges and universities across the U.S. have been active in creating greener campuses. Since 2003, Campus Sustainability Day — celebrated on Oct. 24 — has helped campuses focus on what has been accomplished and what is needed to maintain momentum.
Events have included climate action plan forums, energy reduction competitions between dorms, building rain gardens for local schools and more. The Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium is compiling a list of 2012 events. Send details about your event to judy@aashe.org.
