Jeff Peneston, United Liverpool Faculty Association, was selected as an NEA Foundation Pearson Foundation Global Learning Fellow. Peneston traveled with 31 other fellows to China in June to visit schools in Beijing and Shanghai. Peneston is the 2011 New York State Teacher of the Year.
Two NYSUT members received AFT 2012 Everyday Heroes awards. Joe Satriano, Roslyn TA retiree, founded the Susan Satriano Foundation, which has distributed more than $130,000 in student scholarships. Martin Messner, Schoharie TA, volunteered and organized relief efforts to address damage caused by Hurricane Irene.
Thomas Doyle, Freeport TA, is among 19 educators participating in the 2012 NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research program. The two-year project provides teachers with authentic astronomy research using data housed at NASA's Infrared Processing and Analysis Center in Pasadena, Calif. Channa Comer, United Federation of Teachers; Clare Nugent, Copiague TA; Lawrence Perretto, Mamaroneck TA; and Vanessa Vidalon, Freeport TA, are among 40 middle and high school educators nationwide selected as Siemens Teachers as Researchers.
