Michael Corn
Michael Corn, a veteran union leader, science teacher and advocate for retired teachers, died in late March after a long battle with cancer. His life of achievement and compassion was twice honored at the union’s Representative Assembly with solemn moments of silence.
Corn battled several illnesses through the years, and died after a “valiant, eight-year battle with cancer,” said NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi. Before calling for a moment of silence, Iannuzzi told RA delegates “there’s one seat vacant tonight,” after introducing the union’s board of directors.
Corn was a teacher in the New Hartford Central schools for more than 40 years. He was past president of the New Hartford Teachers’ Association, a position he held for 16 years. He was also a long-time member of the NYSUT Board of Directors.
He taught science at Ralph Perry Junior High School for more than 20 years. He was first elected to the New York State Teachers Retirement System in 1991, and was then re-elected — unanimously — six consecutive times.
At the time of his death, Corn led the Disability Review committee and served on the Audit, Executive, Compensation, Investment and Retired Member committees. He was one of three teacher-members to serve on the system’s board.
Corn is survived by his wife, Jan; a daughter, son-in-law and a granddaughter.
