NYSUT celebrates Women's History Month — March — with a free poster highlighting Sandra Feldman, whose career began as a second-grade elementary school teacher in New York City and ended as president of the 1.3 million-member American Federation of Teachers, one of NYSUT's national affiliates.

Throughout her life, Feldman was a tireless advocate for children, public education and trade unionism in America and around the world.

Her career in the labor movement grew out of her early involvement in the civil rights movement — Feldman participated in the Freedom Rides of the 1960s and the 1963 March on Washington. In meeting with dignitaries ranging from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton to senators, representatives, governors and educators of every kind, Feldman called for a greater investment in public education, high standards and accountability.

Feldman died in 2005 following a long battle with breast cancer.
