Administrative Professional Group at Cayuga CC

Six years of retroactive pay are coming to the 54 members of this mid-level managers' group, after a long fight to win their first contract. Organized in 2006, the group was finally recognized by the state Public Employment Relations Board in 2009. The new agreement is effective from September 2004 to August 2012.

"The six years of retroactive pay, security in terms of our terms and conditions of employment and a union protection/grievance procedure" were the most meaningful gains, said Bob Frame, APG president. "The membership will stick with you if they believe in what you're fighting for." Members received salary increases of 3 percent for each year from 2004-08. For the 2009-11 school years, members will receive 3 percent and a lump sum, depending on their salary.

Frame is grateful to NYSUT staff, particularly its labor relations specialists. "We now have the protection of an organization that has our back," he said.

Smithtown Security Guards Association

The 80 members of this Suffolk County local recently reached a second agreement as NYSUT members, ending a long stalemate. Recognized as a union by PERB in 2004, members won their first contract in 2007.

In addition to salary increases, the local won improvements in scheduling rights, job security and staffing. The guards provide security for the district's middle and high schools. "We had no givebacks or reductions in force," said SSGA President Tony Petrucci. "We have nothing but good things to say about NYSUT. The resources the union brings are off the charts."
