K-12 environmental awards

The President's Environmental Youth Awards program sponsors a two-part competition for K-12 students — a regional certificate program conducted year-round and a regional award offered once a year.

Deadline for the regional program is Dec. 31. A panel from each Environmental Protection Agency regional office reviews applications.

One project from each region will receive a presidential plaque at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Qualified regional applicants receive a certificate signed by the president. Visit www.epa.gov/peya for more information.

Taking the energy challenge

Registration is open for the Green Cup Challenge for K-12 schools committed to shrinking their carbon footprint. The major activity consists of reducing electricity consumption during the month of February. Participating schools create and share a three-minute video as part of the challenge.

Entrance fees must be received by Jan. 14. For information, visit www.greencupchallenge.net/

Seeking green leaders

The Green School Alliance is seeking nominations for the 2011 National Student Climate and Conservation Congress from rising 9th-12th-grade students and faculty environmental leaders. The application deadline is April 1 and nominations are considered on a rolling basis.

The cost of the five-day program, from June 26-July 1, is $500, including meals and lodging. Details at www.greenschoolsalliance.org/sc3_congress.html.
