GUIDELINES


Visual and Performing Arts Virtual Arts Showcase – Sunday, June 5, 2022, 2:00 P.M. – 4:30 P.M.

Submitting Student Work:

  • Work must be uploaded to the following entry form link: nysut.cc/virtualarts2022
  • All work must include a title and brief description – maximum of 100 words (can take the form of prose, a poem, a rap). The descriptions may include the inspiration for the work or something the student would like to share about their work.
  • Student(s) name, grade, Title, school name, city, teacher e-mail & phone must be indicated on the entry form.
  • Work may be individual or small groups
  • Appropriate language is expected.
  • All submitted works and statements may be used for publication beyond this exhibition, including, and not limited to, articles for publication and exhibition.

Visual Arts – Up to 5 images per teacher, jpg, jpeg, png, only, cropped to image, straight, NO mats.

Performing Arts & Media Arts – Up to 2-minute videos, 10 minutes maximum per teacher. 

Videos must be a YouTube or Google Drive Link and must be accessible to view.

Due to copyright laws, video clips in the virtual exhibit may be limited.

Showcase Selection Criteria:

  • Interpretation of Theme
  • Clarity of Message
  • Craftsmanship

Motivating words:  

What other words can you or your students think of?

  • memories, hugs, family, friends, safe, love
  • laughter, wishes, dreams, hope, inspire, celebration
  • fun, games, hobbies, gestures, challenge, independence, time
  • self-esteem, diversity, equity, unity, acceptance, social justice, empathy, transformation
  • heroes, inventions, transportation, objects
  • healing, inclusion, positivity, solitude, peace
  • communication, juxtaposition, unexpected, hidden, altered, substitution, exaggeration, surprise  

Guiding Question:

  • If you could imagine or change anything, how would you show that in your artwork and writing?

Suggested Questions:

  1. How can your submission show:
    1. what you wish you could change in your life, your community, the world?
    2. what you missed doing and imagine yourself doing now?
    3. the impact of technology?
    4. an activity/gesture you imagine yourself doing?
    5. powers that would make you a hero.
    6. a memory you can change.
  2. How can you juxtapose real with unreal in your submission to make it strange or dream-like? 
  3. How does your submission surprise the viewer (audience)?
  4. How can you transform an object, so its original use is changed?
  5. How can a familiar sight be made strange by the unexpected?

Student Description Content Suggestions: (one or more can be used or your choice.)

  • A description of the work.
  • A description of feelings shown in the submission.
  • What is the story you are telling in your submission?
  • How did the process of making your submission affect what you communicated?
  • How did you use elements of your art form to communicate your message?
  • What were challenges you faced as you created your submission, and how did you solve them?
  • What risks did you take while creating your submission?
  • What do you think about your submission?
  • What was the highlight of creating your submission?
