ALBANY, N.Y. Feb. 1, 2018 — As the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics nears, New York State United Teachers and the Fairport Central School District will celebrate 118 classroom teachers, including 19 from the greater Rochester area, who have already won a gold medal, of sorts — earning the nation’s most prestigious credential for excellence in teaching.
At a news conference, Fairport Superintendent Brett Provenzano and NYSUT Executive Vice President Jolene DiBrango, among others, will introduce the region’s newest “class” of local teachers who have demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Rochester-area educators will discuss how achieving certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards directly benefits students in the classroom and even other teachers in a school building.
The news conference will be held Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 9:30 a.m. at Fairport High School, 1 Dave Paddock Way, Fairport, N.Y.
“These teachers have voluntarily embraced a real challenge – proving to an independent board that they have mastered the ‘art of teaching,’” said DiBrango, a former middle-school teacher in Pittsford. “They are our newest standard-bearers for the profession and ambassadors for teaching excellence, and we are proud to support them as part of this union-led initiative.”
New York State United Teachers is a statewide union with more than 600,000 members in education, human services and health care. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the AFL-CIO.
