ALBANY, N.Y. May 23, 2017 — New York State United Teachers released the following statement today:

“President Trump’s proposed 2018 federal budget is an all-out assault on America’s students and its most needy citizens. His planned $10 billion in education cuts is little more than a scheme to divert vital funds toward voucher programs and for-profit charter schools that aren’t accountable to taxpayers. If the president has his way, he would rob students of critical after-school, literacy and anti-bullying programs. He would also slash community schools that provide children in need with essential health and social services, and make it harder for students from working families to afford college. Designed largely to provide tax breaks to the nation’s wealthiest, the White House budget would also rip the bottom from the nation’s safety net by slashing Medicaid, food-stamp eligibility and programs that help the disabled. We urge Congress to declare the president’s heartless budget ‘dead on arrival’ the minute it reaches the Hill.”
