Like the thundering groundswell of the Women’s March and the National Day of Action, opposition to Betsy DeVos’ nomination as U.S. education secretary is busting records everywhere.
NYSUT’s campaign to enlist legislators and boards of education is spreading fast — keep it up!
Meanwhile, NYSUT’s two national affiliates report off-the-chart activism.
A National Education Association (NEA) campaign is setting records with one million emails sent and more than 40,000 phone calls made to senators — keep it up!
The American Federation of Teachers campaign reports record-breaking activism with “ an outpouring of opposition from the American people,” says AFT President Randi Weingarten — keep it up!
This unprecedented response isn’t triggered by advertising — it’s grassroots, viral mad-as-hell-and-can’t-take-it-anymore citizen action— keep it up!
And by the way, when you call our New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, be sure to thank them — they are staunchly opposing DeVos as unqualified and dangerously extremist in her disdain for public education.
Keep it up!

Why we urge the Senate to reject Betsy DeVos
Billionaire Betsy DeVos is dangerously unqualified to be our nation’s Education Secretary. She has no public education experience — she has never been a teacher or school administrator, served on any public board of education, or even attended a public school.
Betsy DeVos demonstrated at her recent hearing that she is ignorant on education policy and the issues and challenges facing public school students, parents, and educators. She is clueless on the laws that ensure services for students with disabilities.
Our schools must not be under the direction of someone so openly hostile to public education. She has spent millions to privatize schools in Michigan. Her policies have been disastrous for those students and the schools they attend. If confirmed, she will undermine and try to privatize public education.
All students deserve a bright future. They deserve someone as U.S. Secretary of Education who defends and supports public schools. They deserve someone who will support quality, affordable public higher education and strong neighborhood public schools that are available to all children. They do not deserve Betsy DeVos.
