HURRICANE IRMA UPDATE: NYSUT is expanding its disaster relief efforts to support members and others dealing with the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma. Learn more.
Hurricane Harvey has unleashed death and devastation in Texas and the storm's remnants continue to dump historic amounts of rainfall — 50 inches is expected — on southeast Texas. As Harvey, now a tropical storm, parks itself along the Gulf Coast, flooding has reached catastrophic levels. At least five people have died and and 30,000 people are in need of shelter. First-responders are trying to rescue thousands while battling the rising water.
NYSUT members can show support for their union colleagues in Texas and other regions affected by Harvey by donating to the NYSUT Disaster Relief Fund. NYSUT will forward all donations to the national effort. We are coordinating with our national affiliates — the AFT and NEA — to make sure that our union brothers and sisters and affected communities receive whatever help and relief we can provide as they try to get back on their feet during the long recovery period ahead.
