NYSUT is proud to present a specially designed website with all kinds of resources, lessons, and materials teaching about Martin Luther King Jr. These stand-alone lessons should provide you with information and strategies to help your students from 5 -12 get a better understanding of MLK.
For Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, I will be in San Antonio, Texas with our AFL-CIO brothers and sisters from all over the country doing community service, participating in an interfaith service, studying, and marching in the MLK parade as we engage in the activities that define King the best.
What we often forget is how passionate Martin Luther King was about labor rights and economic injustice. I'm sure he would have been quite critical of our governor's economic and labor policies that further reward the rich all while ignoring the issue of poverty in this state. This is all the more reason for us as educators to pass on the lessons and message of King.
As NYSUT continues to confront the plight of poverty and its impact on students, schools and communities, this is a perfect time for our members to engage their students in the work and beliefs of MLK. I think you will be quite impressed with the website we have attached for that purpose.
