ALBANY, N.Y. April 23, 2014 - New York State United Teachers members raised more than $1 million for breast cancer research in 2013, marking the seventh consecutive year the statewide union topped the million-dollar mark.
"Our members' commitment to fighting breast cancer and raising money for research and access to care is nothing short of inspiring," said NYSUT President Karen E. Magee. "Our union is honored to support those who have breast cancer today, and NYSUT will continue our work toward finding a cure in the future."
More than 10,000 NYSUT members mobilized across the state during the fall as part of the 2013 American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign, raising a total of $1,206,073 to support investment in breast cancer research.
One in every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer now turns to Making Strides for support in their fight. An integral part of the Strides mission is to provide access to mammograms for women who need them, so that more lives are saved.
Since partnering with the American Cancer Society in 2002, NYSUT has raised nearly $11 million for Making Strides.
New York State United Teachers is a statewide union with more than 600,000 members in education, human services and health care. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the AFL-CIO.
