ALBANY, N.Y. January 3, 2007 - New York State United Teachers today called Gov. Eliot Spitzer's first State of the State address a "message of hope that, like the first day of school, also brings energy, excitement and nervousness."

Iannuzzi speaks to media after Gov. Spitzer's State of the State addressNYSUT President Richard C. Iannuzzi said Spitzer's speech reminded him of a strong teacher's first day in front of a new class. "Really good teachers establish a tone on that first day. The governor did that. It's good classroom management to start strong, with clear goals and responsibilities."

Iannuzzi said the 575,000-member NYSUT, the state's largest union, supports Gov. Spitzer's vision for change.

"We're confident the governor won't make change for change's sake," Iannuzzi said. "New York must have the kind of change that will improve the condition of New York's citizens, especially its neediest, through stronger public education and health care institutions."

NYSUT represents 575,000 teachers, school-related professionals, academic and professional faculty in higher education, professionals in education and health care and retirees. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association and the AFL-CIO.

NYSUT President Richard Iannuzzi and NYSUT Executive Vice President Alan Lubin were at the Capitol for the address.
