Mathematics and Literacy Institutes to focus on teachers in grades 3-8

NYSUT is committed to offering model programs of professional development that offer intellectual stimulation and deepen knowledge of the subjects teachers teach.

Participants will leave the Mathematics and Literacy Institutes with instructional strategies, information, and materials they can use in their school districts, schools, and classrooms to improve teaching and learning and help close the achievement gap.


Mathematics Institute: February 2, 2007

The year 2006 saw the first administration of the grades 3 - 8 mathematics tests. There is still much to be learned from those test results and the 2007 Mathematics Institute will give teachers an opportunity to hear from an education leader in mathematics on making mathematics more meaningful in the classroom. Literacy Institute: February 3, 2007

In this era of NCLB accountability and high stakes testing, with several achievement gaps highlighting inequities in student performance in our state a common response is that the students lack reading skills. Following the introduction of grade 3,5,6,7 as well as continuation of grades 4 and 8 state assessments, NYSUT's Literacy Institute will assist teachers in helping their students increase their literacy skills.
